Is Lancome Cruelty Free? No! Here’s Why

Is Lancome cruelty free? No, Lancome is not truly cruelty-free.

On their website, it reads: ‘No longer does L’Oreal conduct animal testing on any of its ingredients or products, and it also no longer assigns this duty to others. Only when required by authorities for safety or regulatory reasons would an exception be made.’

Information About Lancome

The primary products offered by the French luxury brand Lancôme are skincare, cosmetics, and fragrance. Since being acquired by L’Oreal in 1964, they have been a part of the company.

Cruelty-free Policies

Many truly cruelty-free brands have chosen not to sell their products in China because of its restrictions on animal testing. Unfortunately, Lancome won’t follow suit, so it can’t be said to be cruelty-free.

By using our Cruelty-Free Checklist, we at ethical elephant evaluate every company’s cruelty-free policy. This guarantees that neither the company itself nor any of its suppliers or other third parties, including when required by law, have ever tested animals.

For a detailed list of all the products on our cruelty-free shopping list, see below. We cannot categorize Lancome as being cruelty-free because it already does not meet the last two requirements.

Is Lancome Vegan?

No.

Lancome makes no claims or attempts to position itself as providing vegan-friendly products. We wouldn’t consider anything sold or produced by Lancome to be vegan anyway since Lancome uses animal testing.

In order for products to be considered vegan by ethical elephant standards, the products and their ingredients must not be tested on animals anywhere in the world. Additionally, they must not include any ingredients or by-products that come from animals.

Are Lancome Products Approved As Being Cruelty-free By Any Organizations?

No, Lancôme does not hold any official certifications.

Is There A Parent Company That Owns Lancome That Uses Animal Cruelty?

Yes, L’Oreal, the parent company of Lancome, continues to conduct animal testing in 2022.

In the hopes that it will persuade the parent company to stop using animal testing, some consumers who prefer to support cruelty-free brands may decide to buy and support brands that are owned by such companies.

However, neither Lancome nor L’Oreal, its parent company, are free from cruelty in this instance.

Wherever Animal Testing Is Mandated By Law, Is Lancome Sold?

Yes, Lancome is marketed in nations where animal testing is required. This indicates that it’s likely that they used animals in product testing.

Do They Sell Lancome In China?

In my research, I discovered that Lancome products are indeed sold in stores in mainland China.

An image of Lancome’s store locator with results for mainland China is provided below:

But Doesn’t China Longer Conduct Animal Testing?

By choosing to have their common or general cosmetics manufactured in China, businesses can avoid China’s pre-market animal testing requirements, but Lancome hasn’t explicitly stated that this is what they’ve done.

Additionally, it is not totally excluded that some cosmetics sold in physical stores in China may be subjected to post-market animal testing.

The export and sale of standard or general cosmetics in China without the use of animal testing will be permitted as of May 1, 2021, but only if certain prerequisites are first satisfied. In spite of this, fulfilling these requirements has proven challenging, and it’s still unclear exactly what is permitted under the new rules. Therefore, no company has been identified as having done so successfully as of yet.

See why the majority of cosmetics sold in China (like those from Lancome and L’Oreal) must still undergo animal testing by law in 2022 by following the highlighting on the graph below.

Because Lancome has chosen to open retail locations in mainland China, they are required to give their permission and pay for animal testing of their products. Thus, in 2022, it will be impossible to categorize the majority of cosmetics brands that are sold in China as being cruelty-free.

Lancome may not be performing these animal tests on their own, but they knowingly permit Chinese authorities to test their products on animals before they are sold in China.

Because of these factors, we do not regard Lancome as being cruelty-free by our standards.

Conclusion

Is Lancome cruelty free? No.

There is animal cruelty in Lancôme. They may conduct animal testing on their own, through their suppliers, or through a third party. These kinds of companies may also market goods that must be put through legal requirements for animal testing.
